Season Two, Episode Two
"Some Assembly Required"
We open this episode with Buffy showing how easy the vampire slaying thing has become by going to the graveyard in a short dress and playing with a yo yo while waiting for the vampire. Very professional...
Angel shows up and is surprised not to find Buffy naked with Xander. Buffy sees his jealousy and Angel shrugs it off saying "he’s just a kid." After the awkwardness of Angel spewing his love for Xander, we get our first hint as to what our evil is of this episode, Buffy falls into an open grave. Angel assumes another vampire rose but Buffy sees track marks indicating that the person inside the grave was dragged out.
Buffy and Xander walk into the library to catch Giles practicing how to ask Ms. Calendar out in the most Ravenclaw-y way possible. He’s practicing on a chair and using the most intense vocabulary ever. Buffy tries to help him out by giving him some asking out advice. Poor Giles, needed help from a sixteen-year-old girl about dating.
After delivering her dating wisdom, she discusses with Giles what happened last night on patrol. Xander develops an attitude the second Angel is mentioned, which gives us another look into their hidden love (which would have been totally awesome.)
The Scarf of Sexual Preference says Xander and Angel have the hots for each other
The scoobies start to suspect grave robbing so they start their own grave digging party. Once their, Willow and Buffy have girl talk about Buffy’s “sexy dance” with Xander while Giles and Xander dig up the grave because Buffy was raised to believe “men dig up the corpses and women have the babies.”
The scene changes to Cordelia runs into a dumpster to hide. Angel finds her because heis a creeper that preys on teenage girls thought she was Buffy. Cordelia breaks out into a scream after grabbing a hand while trying to climb out of the dumpster.
The scene changes to Cordelia runs into a dumpster to hide. Angel finds her because he
The scoobies meet up at the library where Cordelia and Angel are waiting for them. Buffy and Angel play it cool while Xander and Angel hide their love and Cordelia attaches herself to Angel’s arm and questions why all bad things “happen to her.”
The gang get locker combinations from Willow of scienece nerds who could create life from dead body parts to which I have two things to say. 1) How the hell do teenagers learn this shit?! and 2) Ew. Before joining in on the fun of illegal locker searched, Giles covers his own ass and it's hysterical. Now, the locker searches get weird once they reach Chris'. When I had a locker, I used it to hang posters of my favorite singers and photos of my dog; Chris, however, has morbid books and articles about when tragic accidents occur. Real smart, dude.
Xander gets amazingly close to what's going on here by saying how “people don’t fall in love with what’s in front of them" and how they "want the dream." He's getting good. And, apparently, so is Giles because he tries asking Jenny out only to have her take control and do the asking.
“Oh please, call me Jenny. Ms. Calendar’s my father." So wish Joss would have gotten more into this xD
I feel bad for Chris. He was lost after his brother died and his mother checked out of life, he turned to the only thing he was sure of: science. He brother his brother back to life only to bring up many more issues because of his brother’s appearances causing him to be insecure (obviously, since he was brother back from the dead.) Because of this insecurity, Chris agreed to make his brother a companion and now is needed to face the harsh reality that this promise involves needing to kill someone.
And Cordelia revives herself from this terrifying experience of almost being they girl they kill by jumping to join the human pyramid. She certainly has her priorities straight.
We jump to the game where Gryffindor is playing and everyone is there to support. Obviously, Giles hates this because he’d rather support Ravenclaw. He gets even more agitated when Xander and Willow both cockblock him.
"I'm obilivious to the fact that you are on a date so don't mind me as I steal your popcorn."
Cordelia gets captured take 2 and makes the one promise she can never keep: saying she won't screm. Buffy has amazing timing and stopping the beheading in time but it's Xander that ends up saving the girl again by walking gliding through the fire. And in the end Daryl ends up dying in the fire while clinging to his headless girlfriend; which is kind of sweet in a creepy way.
Favorite Line: "B-Y-O-Shovel" - Xander
-Sarah!
Kali's Notes:
Just a few things that really stuck out to me in this episode:
- First, Buffy/Angel. It's clear that Angel has decided to pursue Buffy instead of going with what he said last season about the obvious fact that it can never work between them. I have to say that after reading Twilight/Midnight Sun, it's after Edward gets jealous of Mike that he decides to stop hiding his feelings and go after Bella. Which makes me think that Stephanie Meyer is a big fat LIAR for saying she never watched Buffy, since its immediately after seeing Buffy with Xander he decides to go after her. Love Angel's line, "Danced with is a pretty loose term, mated with is a little bit closer." I have to say though that at the end of the episode when they walk off holding hands, it's pretty freakin adorable.
-Also adorable, Giles/Ms. Calendar. I love the role reversal here when the gang goes off slaying and Giles says he can't because he has a date. Oh, the irony. Ms. Calendar is the epitome of 90's feminism. She asks Giles on the date, makes the plans, pretty much takes over the typical "male" role, which I enjoy. It's a good message and it also progresses things along much faster than waiting the ENTIRE SEASON for Giles to have the courage to ask her. I have to add that I never caught this line until this time rewatching the episode. "Call me Jenny, Ms. Calendar is my father." LOL, that's a good one.
-Lastly, we get a bit of foreshadowing towards Cordelia/Xander where she tries to thank him for saving her life, but he's his usual idiot self and it goes over is head. One of my all-time favorite Xander lines is my favorite line for this episode. I love what he says, but I always love how he can be so insightful yet so oblivious at the same time. "People don't fall in love with what's right in front of 'em. People want the dream. What they can't have. The more unattainable, the more attractive."
